Performance Race Week 2003 combined with Formula 18s prove a successful North American Championship

Performance Catamarans, the builders of NACRA, Prindle and Inter catamarans invited the Formula 18 class to join their 2003 Performance North American Championships held in Pensacola Florida October 13th through 16th.

Monday morning the skies were gray with a light NE at 5-10 knots. The Race Committee set up a "Course 2" and the racing got underway by 11:00 am. Then the wind started to. Only seven of the Inter 20 teams to complete the course before the time limit expired.
Tuesday again had gray skies with a Northerly breeze of 15-20 knots. This was a day of work! The bay was really chopped up and several boats capsized. The downwind legs were a wild ride through some pretty thick traffic.

On the fourth race Tuesday the wind dropped to the 10-15 knot range. However this didn't last. By the final downwind leg, the wind started going hard left with increasing pressure. This put everyone on a single trapeze and came into the finish smoking hot.

Wednesday started where Tuesday left off. This time we finally had some sun! The first two races were pretty predictable. By the third race the wind had dropped again to the 7-12 knot range. With the decreased pressure came some nasty shifts with some ugly holes.

Thursday brought about the same pressure as Wednesday directly out of the East. This meant you needed to get to the skinny water on the right side of the course to get out of the East to West current. There was more than one team that went left, hit the left shore sailed into the teeth of the current, got a big lift with some monster pressure and came out sweet at the top mark.

The Formula 18 class was heavy with Performance NACRA F18s, but it also included a number of Hobie Tigers. In the Formula 18 class competition was razor sharp but it was the last race on Thursday where Robbie Daniels and Enrique Rodriguez, in the NACRA Formula 18, clinched first place with 27 points. Greg Thomas and Jacques Bernier, racing a Tiger, finished second with 39 points and Brian Lambert and Jamie Livingston, also on a NACRA F18, took third with 44 points.

The NACRA F18 class championship was scored separately. The rankings are as follows: Robbie Daniels/Enrique Rodriguez, Brian Lambert/Jamie Livingston and Matt & Dominique Struble respectively.

The Performance Nationals included five racing classes. The Inter 20 class also had a highly competitive race series. Nigel Pitts and Alex Shafer on Team Tommy Bahama, commandingly won 1st place with 29 points. Hosting Dealer, Kirk Newkirk of Key Sailing and his crew, Glenn Holmes placed 2nd with 48 points and rounding out 3rd place with 56 points was the team of Steve Lohmeyer and Kenny Pierce.

In the Nacra 6.0 class, Mark Ederer and OBeaudroux¹ commanded the trophy with 19 points, Chris Blake and Gary Chu with 38 points took the 2nd place trophy and with 43 points Kevin Rejda and John Williams carried the 3rd place trophy home.

Performance Race Week had two single-handed classes, the NACRA 5.5uni and the Inter 17. Although both classes were small, the competition was no less intense. Rush Bird, won his 4th National Championship in the Open Class sailing his Nacra 5.5uni with only 16 points - an awesome overall score for a 14 race championship! Ron Miller came in second with 31 points and Fritz Kletke placed third with 49 points. The top three places in the Open class were all singlehanding the Nacra 5.5unis! Chris Sawyer took first place in the Inter 17 class with 24 points. Bill Gillespie placed 2nd with 27 points and Andrew Zitkus rounded out the top three with 30 points.

The weather in Pensacola was nearly perfect for this event. With the changes in wind velocity and shifts all the teams were able to show off their skills, no matter their weight or experience. In the final analysis, if one wanted to see beach catamaran racing done right by those who define the contemporary state of the art, Performance Race Week was the place to see it.

Thanks go out to Key Sailing, this years host for the event and Performance Catamarans for coordinating a well attended 14 race North American Championship. It couldn't have been done without their hard work. Next year, Performance Race Week is tentatively scheduled in Tybee Island, Georgia. Watch your mail for announcements or go to www.performancecat.com for details, as they will be updated as more information is confirmed.
